Why Enterprises Need a CWO (Chief Web Officer)

The role played by the SEO function is important enough to have direct oversight by the C Suite. It brings in significant revenue, particularly in an ecommerce company. Too often, SEO tends to be undertaken long after the marketing and sales collateral have been finalized and the website is launched. These symptoms of SEO seeming to be an afterthought result from two dilemmas:

* Which silo contains the accountability for SEO, such as Marketing or Product?
* At what level of seniority does the accountability for SEO begin?

In a large company, I would place it in the C Suite. I recommend the Chief Web Officer (CWO) title for its leader, positioned in the C suite and funded accordingly.
